The challenge

Three-inch out-of-level slab between the old kitchen and the dining room, plus the island had to support a built-in cooktop and undermount sink with full waterfall ends on both sides. Brass hardware had a 7-week lead time the homeowner did not want to wait on.

What we did

  • 1Stocked the perimeter cabinets first so the contractor could open the island slab without holding up production.
  • 2Templated the waterfall quartz after the island base was set and the substrate was shimmed flat to a 16th.
  • 3Pulled brass hardware from a sister line we keep stocked, the homeowner could not tell the difference next to her inspiration photos.
  • 4Coordinated the cooktop cut-out and undermount sink reveal with the fabricator in one site visit instead of two.

Outcome

Came in 1.2 percent over the supply quote, all of it on a last-minute fridge panel upgrade. Island has held flat through one full winter season, no separation at the waterfall miters.

"We got three quotes. Creative Home Decor was the only one who walked us through what the island actually needed structurally instead of just selling us slab."
